CPF is good!

Sunday, 12 October 2008, 11:29 am | 2,391 views

Every month, when I receive my CPF statement, I feel so rich and the best part is, I know the CPF money won’t run away. CPF will still be around for a long, long time to come… Not only is it earning good interest, my capital is protected.

With the current economic gloom and investors’ money being lost, this certainly qualifies as Quote of the Month - for insensitivity and well, just plain bad PR.

SM Goh said a similar thing: ¨Otherwise, leave your money in CPF … Four percent is a fabulous return without risk. Singaporeans complained it was too low, (but) now they know the meaning of capitalistic existence.¨

The Cabinet obviously missed the point why people complained return was too law. It is the Cabinet´s failure to stop the inflation rate from exceeding the rate of return, thus wiping out any real monetary growth. The PAP still has the cheek to claim they govern Singapore very well. Truth is Singapore has been sliding down since SM Goh took over as Prime Minister.

The salary of any PAP minister is recession proof. CPF is merely loose change.
The public should give the PAP ministers credit for having such foresight ,
they can still laugh all the way to the bank even in a recession.

The insensitivity of Lim Swee Say is expected, he is overwhelmed by having so much money for doing nothing except talking cock.
PAP grass root leaders and supporters should come out and support your union chief and thank this “wonderful govt “. LOL.

If put in the CPF, you will not see it for a long, long time to come… Not only is it a locked-in fund that maturity date gets pushed back repeatedly, earning good interest for GIC and Temasek Holdings (all the crap about fungiblity), my capital is forcibly put to hard work, paying for HDB loan, CPF Life.

    1) see his CPF statement to feel rich, he already is.
    2) remind people that his CPF contribution is prob more than the gross salary of most Singaporeans.

Whether our CPF is earning good interest now is not important anymore, the point is even our coffin money, they also want to makan away by manipulating such a system that we no longer can touch your money anymore. See how cruel these ruling party can be when they themselves are drawing $$$millions salaries out of the citizens forced contributions. If you feel rich after seeing your CPF statement, please, rich ministers, I urge you to pool your riches to help out the despondent investors.

But remember, you cannot take back 100% of yr own forced saving (CPF), you have to leave huge amount for retirment, which you may get it back yourself if you live long enough. And part of it have to put into your own medical account, and again you cannot use yr own money for medical purposes(medicine, consultation etc.) when you need to, but only can use it with approval only.

There is more bad than good for CPF saving.

Sorry, I mean Singapore, not Sinkapore.
If we keep complaining about Ministers” super high pay, people will say that we are just jealous - sour grapes.

We complain about the price increases - we are furious. Now I am sure they hear us, and since they are so well-paid, we must give them a chance to fix the problems about price increases choking all (most) of us. I am sure they won’t just do nothing about the 22% killer-increase in Electricity tariff leading our list of complaints. Give them a chance to fix it.

And refrain from too much noise and complaints or otherwise we may really become SINKAPORE instead of Singapore. Also too much complaints can distract the Ministers from doing their jobs properly. Be calm, let them fix the problems, just wait for the results . We must have faith in our Ministers - after most of us elected them, right? Have a nice Sunday !

Gosh.. you are buying into LHLś argument that because of the voices of the angry and the opposition, the ministers have to spend time and resources to fix these voices instead of focusing on the real problem - our livelihood. If Ministers can´t raise above the situation to not pick dissident voices and focus on solving the real problem, then they are really no better than any other corrupt politicians from the 3rd world.

It’s great for people who have no will to save, or who have limited financial knowledge in investment. They also earn interest at the same time, backed by government. In the end, it’s still your money, just that you won’t get it now.

Of course the bad part is the lack of control. And if the government goes, the money goes. But hey, if the government goes, I think there should be more important things to worry at that time other than money.

Errr…if the government goes and your savings with it what else WOULD you be thinking of? Cheering Alonso on at the Singapore GP? War? Its not as if Malaysia’s going to come romping down the causeway and invade us the second there’s a change in government.

There’s no doubt that the CPF has been beneficial to many Singaporeans, but if we don’t have more control over the funds - and if those funds really can disappear with a change of party - then it seems like it could become something else to force Singaporeans to keep the PAP in power. Vote us out and we bugger off with your money. Can this actually happen?

On the whole I would say that the CPF has been a good initiative despite the rather out of place statements of our ministers. The problem here is, is it enough? What happens when there is a recession, inflation goes up, and the purchasing power of our take home pay is not enough? Does one have to wait until retirement to make use of one’s CPF funds? Also, what about those who have little or no savings in the CPF? Low wage workers - mainly those with low education levels or the elderly or both - have almost no CPF contribution, and thus cannot rely on those funds no matter their age. Yet they are no less Singaporean than those of the middle or upper classes. In these troubled times are they to be left without a safety net?

This is something alot of our singaporean needs to give a serious thought about their life savings in their cpf account. First of all, our cpf monies are divided into 3 categories, mainly the ordinary acct, the medisave acct and the special acct. First, the money in your ordinary acct has somehow been made in such a way that majority of the citizens would not be able to withdraw the money as they are being pushed further and further away from the original retirement age of 55. Secondly, another huge portion of it has been set aside for your so-called medisave whereby when you guys falls ill and hospitalized, then it is just as good as signing them a blank cheque to withdraw the hospitalisation charges with no question ask, and don’t forget you still have to foot certain % in cash no matter how much you have in your medisave acct. And lastly, the special accounts! what are these accounts for ah??? I am pretty sure that most of the citizens do not even know what this account is for, right? anyone can advise? As a simple calculation, do you guys out there knows that almost half of your total cpf contributions goes to your medisave and special accounts, leaving you the other half which merely enough to service your world class HDB housing loans. Why keep so much of the citizens monies and made them suffer? and you call it C.P.F is GOOD for the citizens or is good for the ruling party?

More good times are coming. If 2% increase in GST in good times led to widespread inflation, imagine the consequences of a 22% increase in electrical bill at the onset of a recession. Ask the 24-hr coffee shop, the independent schools with their air-con classrooms and lecture theatres, factories and town councils.

What to do? It’s happened. Let’s move on. Learn to see things in perspective. Every month, when I receive my bills, I feel so lucky and the best part is the government will be providing help via a targetted approach. “How much do you want? Do you want three meals in a hawker centre, food court or restaurant?” ‘You want to cover up to 30 per cent, 40 per cent or 50 per cent? Yada yada.

Is the debate here about whether 4% is good or bad? No comments about that, though its better than nothing for having your personal money automatically locked up in a vault. It won’t be lost - neither can you touch it - but wait, it can shrink in value!

That’s why they dare not disclose their books to the ppl. Don’t you ppl observe that everytime whenever there are issues concerning this topic, the garment would just come up with a positive figure to let the ppl know that your monies are in good hand. However, these figures changes drastically within months. There is an equally matching negative word to describe a group of people just like yourselve and it is called “blockheads”.

“It’s great for people who have no will to save, or who have limited financial knowledge in investment. ”

Even for this group of people, the fast inflating nature of money (thanks to some screw** up mechanism of this so-called integrated global financial system and yes, also something we can truly call our own, GST) will wipe out a huge chuck (if not totally) of whatever interest it may earn you.

If someone or some organisation is holding on to your money and once in a while give you “well crafted logical” explanation (probably thought through by some scholarly material) to defer the date of the need in paying you, I suggest that you better say “thank you” and demand the money right away if it can be done.

For CPF and unfortunately, this cannot be done at this moment.

I fancy how many figures CPF he has in his account when there is a cap after a certain salary level. Besides with inflation is around, how much money in the COF can you consider yourself RICH when you can only use them (partially) when one reach retirement age to allow partial withdrawal from the accounts.

This kind of smooth talk is not what Singaporean wants to hear. Show us more monetary measures taken to help the distraught investors of the minibonds and other foreign bank bonds. Show us that Singapore will not go into a bad recession (already in recession) and unemployment rate will not crash below 25%. Show us more credible speeches in the parliament rather than staring into the blank and trying hard to stay awake………

By then when you reach that age, LKY is gone, LHL is half-gone, most ministers are gone or retired, then as usual the new batch will continue to give the crap and rhetoric and justify any money game and excuses. I believe they are some who are actually feeling extremely rich collecting pension in addition to their monthly salary and CPF. This is what I call having the best of all worlds. But then its reserved for the elite few.

I am sure I will not be corrupted if I have so much money. People might ask why the lower ranks are not paid more to prevent corruption. For them we have severe punishment to prevent corruption. I am sure if corrupted officials are executed like in China, we would not have to pay them so much and we would not have the hear them say that they have not enriched themselves.
